The quickest way to break a reader’s trust is to direct them to a product or service that not only fails to solve their pain points but creates new problems. One such example is when the conversion involves visitors putting in their email and then they get spammed.
If you can’t test the product or service, try to get feedback from real users. Take a look at the online reviews. Does it have high ratings or do people generally dislike it? Promoting a product that fails to live up to expectations can come back to haunt you. Always do some research beforehand.
3. Put Content Before the Sale
You can almost always spot the bloggers who are new to affiliate marketing. If you followed them for some time, you notice that their content changes as soon as they begin to market for a company. They start to focus a lot less on producing quality content and try to hone in on the sale. The problem is that people don’t go to these sites to get sold to.
Even for websites that specialize in product reviews and comparisons, people visit for information. Focus more on the pain points customers have and talk up why the product you promote delivers on value. Leave the big sales pitch to the company selling the product or service.
4. Maintain Your Integrity
Some affiliate marketing programs will ask you to leave your integrity at the door. They may tell you to talk up a program you never tried or brag about a lifestyle you never had. Maybe the company even asks you to write an article on your website about the safety of a product that you can tell is questionable and may have adverse side effects.
This, too, can come back to haunt you. If the company goes down in a scandal later on, you don’t want to be dragged down with it. If something seems suspicious or a company asks you to lie, walk away. No matter how high the pay is, remember that your reputation is priceless.
5. Be Transparent About Marketing
Amazon and many other affiliate programs require you to be transparent about your work relationship with their brand. Even when an affiliate program does not require you to disclose this information, you should. Your readers will appreciate your honesty.
If you are not open about your affiliation to the company but readers suspect it, many may close the page and move on. Even if they are interested in the product, they may deliberately bypass the link and go directly to the company’s website to ensure you don’t get a commission. Honesty really is the best policy on this one. Finally, note that in some cases, full disclosure is a legal requirement.
6. Write Evergreen Content
People often get caught up in writing blog posts that are seasonal or based on trends. This content can bring in a temporary spike to your traffic and affiliate marketing sales, but they shouldn’t form the full basis of your content marketing plan. Writing evergreen content has more long-term potential and provides a stronger return on investment.
That said, it’s a bad idea to ignore holidays completely. Just be sure to write your posts in a way that they can be repurposed and republished. The less work you have to put into this the better. Some products feature upgrades on an annual basis. These may provide the best options for linking within seasonal content. When you can find products that never get old, such as books or pet toys, then you’ve struck gold.
7. Exercise Patience
If you have a nine-to-five and decide to start an online business or monetize your blog, keep your other job for as long as you can. It helps you to maintain your peace of mind and remain patient. Otherwise, you may soon feel stressed from constantly checking to see what sales you have made and how successful your affiliate marketing work has been so far.
Affiliate revenue needs a chance to build up. You may have to grow your website traffic more or give people time to get used to the idea that you’re marketing for companies on your site now. Some readers have a natural aversion to this and may take some time to read just before feeling comfortable enough to click on the links.
8. Track Your Progress
There are some seasoned and successful affiliate marketers who still make this mistake. They may make good money from their marketing efforts but have no idea what campaigns work and which ones don’t. This makes it impossible for them to become more efficient. Even if they are overall effective, they could save hours every week by getting rid of the campaigns that aren’t earning them money.
This should go beyond custom links that track what brings in an income. You should be tracking your income as well. Affiliate marketing is a business, so be sure to treat it like one. When you start to get a better idea of what works and how much it brings in, you’re in a better position to project future income and map your career moves accordingly.
